Angelina Jolie Speaks Out Against Planned Quran Burning by Florida Pastor.

Pastor Terry Jones, here is your message from God, or Goddess or a goddess at least. Well, from Angelina Jolie, who is certainly a goddess in her own right. The thirty-five year old actress spoke out against the decision by Jones and his followers to burn the Quran on 11 September 2010. She was visiting Pakistan trying to bring awareness to the world about the floods which have submerged a fifth of that desert nation. Her criticism of the planned book burning echoes that of many US officials as well as several US generals and world religious leaders.

“I have hardly the words that somebody would do that to somebody’s religious book, she told reporters in Islamabad. She had just finished a visit to northwestern Pakistan, one of the regions hardest hit by the flooding.

Jones and his fifty-five followers believe that the Quran is evil because it is not the Bible, and that they are part of a spiritual war against Satan. He has received the support of Fred Phelps, apparently, of Westboro Baptist Church, another cultish church associated with Christianity.

The issue has not been percolating in Pakistan because of the devastation wrought by the floods that have killed over 1,700 people and displaced or affected eighteen million more.

In keeping with local Muslim custom, Jolie wore a long dress and covered her hair with a black scarf. She stated about the flooding “I was shocked especially by how high the floodwaters went. In some of the people’s houses, it was nine feet (three meters) high. . .There’s lots of speculation about why this one has not gotten the attention it deserves. Even all of the wonderful coverage … is not getting the response that usually it’s able to get.”

Jolie is a UN Goodwill Ambassador, and the UN hoped that her visit would help spark fundraising to help Pakistan. The UN has appealed for $460 million in emergency funds, but received only $294 million since 11 August.
